Ever since the invention of litter, seagulls have been thriving in UK; abandoning their humble maritime culture in favour of a better life amongst the humans and their bountiful leavings.

Gull migration to British coastal towns peaked in the 1960s, and places like Brighton with its rich offerings of boardwalk chip shops, unlicensed Chinese restaurants and lack of a proper waste management infrastructure became a haven for a new generation of gulls. A generation disillusioned by the drudgery of their forefathers, looking for a home where the streets were literally paved with scampi.

During this time, seagulls and humans endured a turbulent relationship. There were, however, many keen to embrace the winged travellers, and surprisingly close relationships began to be formed.

We discovered these photographs in the Brighton and Hove archives that appear to show just such a relationship; a young lady enjoying a day out at the beach with her seagull boyfriend.
